Belthangady: Thieves attempted to break into the forest department’s godown here late on Saturday night by carving open a hole on the rear wall of the godown. However, the attempt turned futile as the forest guard stationed at the godown was awakened by their attempt to open the shutter, post which the thieves fled.

The thieves entered the property by jumping over the compound wall of a house located on the rear of the godown at 11:50 pm in the night and by 2:30 am, they had carved open a hole into the rear wall of the structure and gained access. Finding only incense store there, they proceed further inside and attempted to open the shutter of another room and during this process they created some noise which alerted the guard and hence the thieves made good their escape.

On the surface, the CCTV has shown two persons entering the structure. Meanwhile, it is also noticed from another CCTV camera, two others having covered their faces, attempted to change the direction of the CTV camera.

Last July, robbers had gained access into this very godown by breaking open the lock and made off with 344 kg of sandalwood. Then, around 54 kg of sandalwood was remaining at the godown. Have gained this information, a robbery attempt might have been carried out, suspect forest department officials.

After the last incident, CCTV cameras were installed around the godown.

On the other hand, on Sep 18th, a special police team had caught some robbers in possession of 10 elephant tusks at Dujiri near Ujire in Belthangady.

Belthangady police inspector Kalaeimar, zonal forest officer Subbayya Naika have visited the spot and carried out inspection.
