A gang of armed robbers decamped with gold jewellery and cash from the residence of a school teacher on Monday late evening barged into a house after using a gun to threaten the family members.

The robbers barged into the resident at around 8.45 pm and held the family hostage for around 20 minutes as they searched the house for valuables.

The robbery took place at the house of Sheela, 42, who resides with her mother Premakumari, 65, and 22-year-old son Srinidhi in Vijayapura town, near Devanahalli, on the northern outskirts of Bengaluru.

The robbers barged into the residence after ringing the doorbell. When Srinidhi opened the door, they shoved him and dragged him to the sofa and pointed a knife at him. The gang also pulled out a gun and threatened the family to hand over the valuables.

They snatched Sheela’s gold mangalya chain, a pair of gold bangles and a ring as well as Srinidhi’s gold chain. Later, the gang locked the family into the bedroom and searched the house for other valuables. They finally left around 9.05 pm.

A complaint was lodged by the family with Vijayapura police. Upon checking CCTV footage police found that the robbers had escaped in a car.

Based on the description given by the family, police have prepared sketches of the gang and a search has been launched to nab them. Meanwhile, police suspect that the firearm used to threaten the family was a toy gun.
