Bengaluru: For the first time in the history of India, Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) will start electric bus service in the state capital soon. The decision to start the service came after a three month long trial run of an electric bus in Bengaluru city. An electric bus costs around Rs 2.6 crore and the proposed electric buses will provide clean, green transport service to the commuters.
BMTC aims to start the service of 150 electric buses in the initial stage and tenders will be called soon for the supply of the buses. The prices of the buses are depended upon the size of their battery as the cost of battery is higher than other spare parts of the bus. The union government is expected to give Rs 1 crore subsidy to each electric bus. Running cost of an electric bus is estimated at Rs 10 per kilometer whereas cost diesel run buses touches Rs 15 to Rs 23 per kilometer.
