Cattle theft: Police arrest two, 6 escape

Udupi: Two persons have been successfully arrested by the police in connection to stealing three cows belonging to Gopal Naik from Kuchchoor Sallekatte near Hebri on the June 19. The stolen cattle were worth about Rs 45,000.The arrested are identified as Abdul Rahiman from Venoor and Dharmesh from Chara.

A police team led by Hebri station house officer Mahabala Shetty has been trying relentlessly to crack the case under the guidance of assistant superintendent of police, Krishna Kanth and circle inspector, Halamurthy. The police inform that, of the gang of 8 thieves, 6 managed to escape and efforts are on to nab them as well. During the operation, the police seized a pick-up vehicle used for transporting the stolen cattle.

Mr naik’s family was entirely dependent on the income derived from dairying for a living and the theft of their cows has pushed the family into a dire strait.

Locals suspected

Meanwhile, the police have expressed suspicion that some locals might be in cahoots with the cattle thieves. They suspect that these locals might be conveying information about the cattle sheds having easy access to cattle thieves. The police are presently facing a nightmare with the increase in the number of cattle thefts in Hebri region.

As a precautionary measure, the police have arranged special night beats in important roads around Hebri. They have also requested the people to provide any information about suspicious movement or activities in the region.
