Chris Morgan talks about Universal’s junked Dark Universe plans

Los Angeles: Writer-producer Chris Morgan believes Universal’s plan for horror cinematic universe failed to lift off because “it was trying to come together too quickly”.
Dubbed as Dark Universe, the studio in 2017 had planned a cinematic world around its classic monster characters and roped in stars like Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe, Javier Bardem and Sofia Boutella for it.
However, the failure of Cruise-starrer “The Mummy” the same year, spilled water on the plans.
Talking to io9 about the failed attempt to start the franchise, Morgan said, “I don’t (have) regrets or anything like that. I think it’s just, you know, I think it probably was trying to come together too quickly, I would say.”
“And I think everyone got to take a breath and take a step back and take a look at it, and now just focus on maybe doing it a little bit slower,” he added.
The studio is now planning to release individual films on the characters with “The Invisible Man” reboot being the first one.
“I think Universal’s going about the monster films the right way which is to really focus on taking a good script, good story, put it out there, if you’re going to build a universe build it from something strong like that,” Morgan said about the film.
“And I think they’re not so much worried about putting a universe out there as they are making great monster films, so I’m looking forward to seeing them,” he added.
“The Invisible Man” will feature Oliver Jackson-Cohen of “The Haunting of Hill House” fame in the titular role alongside Elisabeth Moss. It is set to be released in March 2020.
