Cyanide Mohan sentenced for life in two cases

Mangaluru: Serial killer Mohan Kumar (55), popularly known as Cyanide Mohan for his penchant to murder his victims by poisoning them with cyanide has been sentenced for life by the Sixth Additional District and Sessions Court relating to the murder of two young women. The judgement was delivered on Wednesday March 27.

Case 1:

Mohan was found guilty by the court of promising marriage to a 34-year-old woman from Peramogaru in Kedila gram panchayat, Bantwal taluk, taking to her to a lodge at Madikeri, having coitus with her and then murdering her by giving her cyanide tablets in the guise of contraceptives.

A total of 39 witnesses, 37 documents, and 39 exhibits were examined during this trial.

Case 2:

The accused was also found guilty of his crime in another case in which he murdered a 32-year-old lady from Indira Awaz colony at Peraje to a lodge at Mysuru by repeating his modus operandi of giving cyanide tablets in the guise of contraceptives after having coitus with the victim.

The court examined 44 witnesses, 70 documents and 37 exhibits pertaining this case.

Judge of the court, D T Puttarangaswamy, said that Mohan’s guilt has been conclusively proved in both the cases.

As Mohan is currently lodged in Hindalga jail at Belgavi, the hearing was conducted through video conferencing. Public prosecutor, Judith Olga Margaret Crasta argued on behalf of the prosecution.

Sentencing:

In addition to sentencing Mohan for life in both the cases, the Court also awarded seven years rigorous imprisonment for killing with poisonous substance and rape, five years rigorous imprisonment for stealing gold ornaments and destroying evidence, six years rigorous imprisonment for promising to marry and abduction, and six months imprisonment for marriage promise and cheating. The accused was also fined Rs 18,000.

The Judge also mentioned that both the families of the victims were eligible to get compensation through district legal services authority.

20 murders

Thus, including the sentencing in the two cases, Mohan Kumar who has 20 murder cases booked against him has so far been sentenced in 9 cases. He has been awarded death sentence in three murder cases while in remaining six cases he has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
