Mangaluru: DK Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil suggested that an introduction of Electronic Road Price (ERP) for private vehicles in the city limits will help curb the traffic and ensure the safety of pedestrians here.
Addressing the press, Senthil said, Mangaluru being one of the developing cities is facing major traffic which has made it difficult for people to take a walk for petty reasons. This has also caused danger for pedestrians or cyclist, it is better to implement ERP for private vehicles which are unnecessarily entering the city,”
Similar systems have been implemented in Singapore and they have seen very good results from this. Pollution level will also be dropped down by this policy, When private vehicles enter the city, a fixed amount is debited from the ATM card of vehicle owners. This will result in the smooth functioning of public transport and also will reduce the traffic congestion,” he added.
“Before enforcing ERP, the plan will be discussed in a meeting with Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) and other representatives. The amount for a particular vehicle for a particular region will also be fixed after taking suggestions from the representatives. The ERP will be introduced in phases,” he said.
ERP system, if introduced here, then Mangaluru will be the first such city in the entire country”, DC said.
