Dereliction of duty: Four policemen suspended

Udupi: Four police constables, including a head constable of Manipal police station have been suspended by the Udupi district police authorities in connection with the escape of a rape and murder accused when he was being escorted to Hiriyadka jail.
Head constable Umesh, constables Rehamatullah and Channesh and driver Suresh are the suspended police personnel, informed sources.
It is gathered that Hanumanthappa Basappa Kambali hailing from Bagalkot, an accused in the rape and murder of a minor in Manipal, escaped when being taken to jail on Sunday.
According to sources, Basappa was produced before a special court on Sunday, and was remanded in 14 days judicial custody. While he was on way to jail in Hiriyadka, he managed to escape, and was caught a day later.
Following the incident Nisha James, superintendent of police considering this as dereliction of duty ordered for the suspension of four police constables, informed sources.
A case with this regard has been registered with the Hiriyadka police.
