Congo: A mountain gorilla that went viral for photobombing its caretaker’s selfie in 2019 has died after a prolonged illness.

The gorilla named Ndakasi died on September 26 at the age of 14.

The Virunga National Park announced the news in a tweet on October 5. “It is with heartfelt sadness that Virunga announces the death of beloved orphaned mountain gorilla, Ndakasi,” the message read.

Since 2007, the orphaned gorilla was being cared for by her caretaker and lifelong friend, Andre Bauma at the Senkwekwe Center, located inside the park. This is the only facility in the world that looks after orphaned mountain gorillas.

Ndakasi’s photobomb in 2019 brought her global fame. Now a sad picture of the gorilla hugging her caretaker in her last moments alive has gone viral on social media.
