Bhadravati: Karnataka state government has decided to handover 150 acre mine area located in Bellary to Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Limited (VISL) for mining. In a cabinet meeting held in Bengaluru on Monday, the government decided to handover the mine area to the mining company on contract basis as it has been facing financial crunch for the last a few years as it doesn’t own any mine in the state.
Earlier, VISL was on its way to its complete shutdown following the absence of mine for its routine functioning. After necessary paper works, the mine area is expected to be handed over to the VISL, the sources said. With the new move, the state government has fulfilled the long pending demand of VISL employees for a new mine.
The employees of the VISL staged huge protests earlier this year urging the state government to hand over a mine and opposing the move of the Karnataka government to handover the company to private sector.
