Karnataka ranks 1st in suicides by unemployed people

Bengaluru: Karnataka has come first in the number of suicides committed by unemployed people.

The nationwide figures were presented by Union Labour and Employment Minister Bhupendra Yadav in Lok Sabha on Monday.

As per NCRB data, 553 unemployment-related suicides were reported in Karnataka in 2019, followed by Maharashtra (452) and Tamil Nadu (251).

The number of unemployment-related suicides in the State has increased since 2016.

224, 375, and 464 suicides were reported in 2016, 2017, and 2018 respectively.

Additionally, suicides in the State too has risen from 2,298 in 2016 to 2,851 in 2019.
