Police rescued a woman after her husband allegedly attempted to kill her with a sickle after locking the door of their residence in Basrur on Saturday night.
The accused, Lakshman (38), attacked his wife Anita (32) with a knife following a minor tussle between them. He then locked the door of the house to prevent anyone from entering.
The drama unfolded for over an hour as the police and fire brigade personnel tried to rescue Anita.
The couple, originally from Sagara, were working as labourers in the garden of an old age home and they were allotted a room in the premises for lodging. On Saturday night around 9 PM, an argument broke out between them and in a fit of rage Lakshman attacked Anita with a knife.
Though the Kundapura (Kandloor) rural station personnel and fire brigade teams rushed to the scene, they were unable to enter the house as Lakshman kept brandishing a sickle and threatened anyone who attempted to enter.
The police officers threw chili powder on him through a window, in a bid to subdue him but Lakshman managed to evade capture. They then used a gas gun, but he continued to resist.
Eventually, a team broke through the door while another team entered through the window to rescue Anita and arrest Lakshman successfully. An injured Anita was subsequently taken to Kundapura Hospital for treatment.
