Mangaluru: Taking suo motu cognizance of the water pollution caused by the discharge of effluents directly into River Phalguni, Lokayukta Justice P Vishwanath Shetty has served a 23-page notice to Dakshina Kannada Deputy commissioner and other officials.

Locals have in the past voiced concern over rampant discharge of untreated chemicals effluents from the industrial area at Jokatte into the water bodies here.

Expressing concern over pollution of the freshwater sources, the Lokayukta has asked the DC, Mangaluru city corporation commissioner, Tahsildar and KSPCB officials to submit a report before November 2 listing the measures taken to control the environmental pollution

In the notice, Justice P Vishwanath Shetty has mentioned the Supreme Court verdict which states that it is the duty of the state and the officials to stop environmental pollution.
