Kasargod: A man who successfully managed to smuggle 1.2 kg gold undetected at the Mangaluru airport, was apprehended while he was handing over the consignment to another person at Kerala State Road Transport Corporation bus stand here on Monday.
Abdul Shahid (28), a Nellikunje resident and Shamir (30) from Vidyanagar Chala are the arrested.
According to reports Shahid had arrived with the said consignment of gold, valuing worth Rs 35 lakhs from Gulf at Mangaluru airport. The smuggled gold, which apparently had a silver sheen was hidden within flasks, speakers in the form of thin wires and wafer-thin sheets, and had gone undetected by the customs officials at the airport. Shahid’s luck however ran out when he was handing over the consignmet to Shamir at the bus stand.
The case is being probed by the customs officials. Meanwhile, it is presumed that Shahid was a mere pawn in the whole smuggling bid.
