Mangaluru: Police officials have arrested a man on the charge of sexually assaulting a 21-year-old Mysuru-based woman and cheating her of Rs 35 lakh.

The accused have been identified as Mohammed Azwan (32), a native of Mudipu. Police traced Azwan in a hideout in Choodasandra in Bengaluru.

It is said that the woman met Azwan at a mobile store in Mysuru two years ago and he introduced himself as Sharath. After which, they were reportedly in a relationship.

He also took from her a total of Rs 35 lakh on different occasions to operate two eateries in Mysuru and Hunsur. Later, he revealed his original identity and said that he cannot marry her as he was already married to another woman.

He also did not return the borrowed money. The woman came to Mangaluru on Tuesday to meet the accused at his house in Mudipu seeking return of the money transferred to him. When she was at his house, she claimed she was allegedly assaulted by one of his family members.

Later,  people saw her sitting in a bus shelter at Konaje and shedding tears. Following a call received on their emergency response system, police went to the bus stand and brought her to the Konaje police station.

She then revealed the story and also confessed that she does not have money to travel back. The police inspector arranged for a ticket and told the bus driver and conductor to safely take her to Mysuru.

Initially, she wanted to file a case against the accused in Mysuru but changed her mind after receiving a call from her advocate. Later, she lodged a complaint in Mangaluru.

VHP and Durga Vahini activists termed the incident as ‘Love Jihad’ and have demanded immediate action against the accused.
