Mani girl murder: Cyanide Mohan gets life imprisonment

Mangaluru: Notorious serial killer Cyanide Mohan has been sentenced to life imprisonment in connection to the seventh case against Mohan for murdering a girl from Mani. The judegment was passed by the sixth additional district and sessions court here on Saturday February 23.

The trap

The 25-year –old victim came in contact with Mohan at Wenlock Hospital during which he introduced himself as Sadanand Naik and claimed to be belonging to the same caste as hers and promised to marry her. He had informed the lady’s mother that he was employed in the department of agriculture at Karkala and that he wished to marry her daughter. The lady’s mother has invited him over to her house for a visit.

The trust

Earning the trust of the lady, he made sure she fell in love with her and asked her to reach Puttur bus stand on January 2, 2008 duly wearing all her jewellery. Then, the couple went to Madikeri where Mohan hired a room in the name of Anand Naik and during the night he raped the lady.

The murder

The next day on Jan 3rd, Mohan invited the lady for a stroll and asked the lady to keep her ornaments and cash in the hotel room. He escorted her to Madikeri bus stand and gave her cynaide laced tablets informing her them to be contraceptives. The innocent lady went to the restroom to consume the tablets and breathed her last. Her corpse was found on Jan 4th by the police and after autopsy a case of unnatural death was registered.

The escape

Meanwhile, Mohan returned back to the room, collected the gold jewellery, cash and escaped. Some days later Mohan called a youth residing in the neighborhood of the deceased woman and asked to speak to the younger sister of the deceased woman. He informed her that he had married the lady and would be returning in a week and asked to not to look for them. Eventually, a missing case was registered in Vittal police station.

The investigation

The police were investigating a murder case of a girl from Barimaru during 2008 when Mohan confessed to the police about having killed a lady from Mani. His statement was recorded by the then assistant superintendent of police Chandragupta and inspector Nanjunde Gowda, who investigated the case handed over the case to Corps of Detectives who filed the chargesheet in the Court.

The sentence

40 witnesses, 64 documents and 38 evidences were by the Judge of the Court D T Puttaranga Swamy post which the above judgment was passed. The prosecution was represented by public prosecutor Judith O M Crasta. Mohan has been fined, awarded different jail terms with the imprisonment for life under IPC Sec 302.

The judge also noted that the family of the deceased lady is eligible to claim compensation from the district legal services authority.
