Mangalore: While teeth in babies start to come through at about six months, a couple from Manjeshwar were shocked to find that their newborn girl had two lower teeth at birth.
The baby was born at Kumbale hospital on July 4. Doctors here advised the couple to consult a dentist as the infant had developed natal teeth.
As per the doctor’s advise the couple visited Suraksha Dental Clinic in Hosangadi for the baby’s treatment.
Speaking to Udayavani, Dr Murali Mohan said that it is very rare for babies to develop teeth at birth. Though natal teeth are soft, it is better to have them surgically removed as it may have a weak root and there is a risk of the tooth getting stuck in the child’s throat if it breaks free while breastfeeding. However, in this case, he said that the baby’s teeth are strong and hence there was no need for surgery.
It must be noted that natal teeth are different from neonatal teeth which appear in the child’s mouth during the first month.
