Udupi: The district police department has launched a unique beat patrol named ‘Operation Sunset’ in Manipal on a trial basis. The beat from 7 PM to 11 PM specifically aims to curb and monitor the drug menace in the area, said district superintendent of police N Vishnuvardhan on Tuesday.

Addressing the media at the press club here, the SP informed that based on the results the operation would be extended to other police stations in the district.

Operation Sunset consists of a team of inspectors, deputy inspectors, and women police personnel who will patrol the blackspot areas where drugs are likely consumed or sold.

“We have already identified black spots where illegal drug consumption takes place. Operation Sunset would target illegal activities relating to harassment of girls, inappropriate behaviors, and possession, sale, and use of drugs in a unique way,” he said.

Replying to a question about the traffic congestion, the SP said there is increased traffic on main roads on weekends and holidays. Vehicles parked on roads, mainly in front of commercial complexes with inadequate parking facilities, worsen the traffic woes. “Discussions will be held with the district administration and the municipality on how actions can be taken against commercial building owners flouting rules on parking spaces,” he said.

He also assured to install state-of-the-art traffic signals, with the cooperation of the municipality, to manage vehicle movement at 12 junctions including Manipal.

Be cautious of online fraud:

He also cautioned the public to be cautious about their safety in online activities. He asked people not to share their bank details, OTP, and other personal details with anyone over the phone, or on any apps. Anyone who is cheated by online scams should approach the nearest police station immediately, he said.

“If the nearest station is informed before arriving at CEN police station at the district headquarters, the local police will contact the concerned bank and take steps to block the fund transfer process,” he said.
