Organ donation: Accident victim gives life to 8 people

Udupi: The family members of a brain-dead accident victim donated his organs and gave new life to eight people thereby setting an exemplary act of philanthropy.

Having suffered grievous injuries in a road accident that occurred at 1 pm on May 27 near Brahmavar, Sudeep Poojary was admitted to the KMC hospital in Manipal for treatment. However, at 9.15 pm on May 28, Sudeep was declared brain dead as per the protocol and functionality of Human Organ Act of 1994 by the team of doctors in the hospital.

Sudeep Poojary’s elder brothers Sandeep and Pradeep Poojary, expressed their willingness to donate the organ of brain-dead Sudeep. Accordingly two cornea, two kidneys, liver, pancreas, heart and lungs were removed, which helped to give life to eight people.

As per Jeevasarthakathe (former ZCCK) protocol and decision, two corneas (eyes) and two kidneys were transferred to patients in KMC Manipal itself. Liver and pancreas were sent to BGS Hospital in Bengaluru and heart valves and lungs were sent to BGS Hospital in Chennai.

Noble deed

“Organ donation is a noble deed. By donating his organs, our brother has done a great act even in his death,” said Sandeep and Pradeep Poojary.

Organ donation is an extremely good and noble deed, which saves the lives of many people. It has got high importance in life. People have to encourage these kinds of noble deeds. The media has to convey this to the public and encourage more people to take up organ donation,” said Dr Avinash Shetty, medical superintendent.

Green corridor

A green corridor was created was created from Manipal to Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) with assistance from Udupi police department on the morning of May 29th for the sending of the harvested organs to Bengaluru.
