Police constables suspended after undertrial escapes from police custody

Udupi: Two days after an undertrial escaped from police custody, Udupi district Superintendent of Police Laxman B Nimbargi on Monday, October 8 suspended the on-duty constables escorting him.
Uday Kumar of Byndoor police station and Gopal H. of the District Armed Reserve Police Force stand suspended for dereliction of duty.
The undertrial Suresh Marathi, 26, was arrested, under the POSCO Act, by the Byndoor police some two months back. He had been accused of sexually assaulting his sister-in-law. On October 6, Suresh was produced before the Udupi Special Court in connection to the case and was being escorted back to Karwar prison when he managed to escape after jumping from a moving train.
“A report from the DySP of Kundapur, has found the constables guilty of negligence towards their duty. A search operation for the absconding undertrial is underway, but, we are yet to get any significant lead,” said SP Nimbargi.
