Possibility for another cyclone in Karavali belt

Mangaluru: As the countdown for the arrival of monsoon in the state begins, the atmospheric pressure has once again fallen in the Arabia Sea. If this dip in atmospheric pressure increases, there is a possibility for the emergence of another cyclone in the Karavali, informs the weather department.

As per the current available information, the monsoon is expected to enter the Karavali in Kerala on May 29th. The monsoon is also expected to enter the state’s Karavali region soon. Heavy winds have already started in Bangalakolli and there is a possibility for good rains in the beginning of the monsoon season itself.

Last year, the monsoon had entered Kerala on May 30th, but it later became weak. As a result, the monsoon entry into the state’s Karavali region was delayed by a week till June 7th, and from June 12th, the whole state witnessed the monsoon. This time, the monsoon started soon on the southern regions of Andaman on May 25th itself.

3 powerful cyclones in the span of 6 months

Last year, from the months of December to May, the state has come under the influence of three powerful cyclones. In December, Okhi cyclone covered the southern part of the Karavali. The one week long heavy rains and winds it sustained caused massive damage to crops and also took away lives. In the month of May came Sagar cyclone which induced wind and rain along the Karavali coast. A few days later, Meknu cyclone emerged from the Arabian Sea and caused a lot of damage in Oman. There was good rain witnessed at some places due to Mekno cyclone.

“There is a little drop in the atmospheric pressure in Arabian sea even before the arrival of the monsoon. Due to this, there is good rain for the time being. If this dip in atmospheric pressure fall down further, there is a possibility of emergence of a cyclone,” informed Gawaskar Sang, scientist at the statenatural calamity in-chagre office.
