Pune: Mudhol police officials attempt to arrest a businessman here in a case of cheating has now turned into a face-off with local police and lawyers of the businessman.
The police team from Mudhol arrived at the house of Harry Dhaul at Pune’s Rakshak Nagar. They told him and his wife Laxmi that they are to leave for Karnataka for various cases registered against them there.
At that moment, Dhaul complained of chest pain and said that he has to be admitted to the hospital soon. His lawyers arrived and said the same to the Mudhol police team.
The lawyers also called the local police, who arrived and escorted Dhaul to a private hospital in the city.
The Mudhol police team is now guarding the hospital to arrest and take away Dhaul once he is discharged. Dhaul has also got his lawyers and aides stationed at the hospital.
Dhaul’s case pertains to cheating Nirani Sugars Limited, owned by former Karnataka industries minister Murugesh Nirani. Nirani had registered a case in 2017 against Dhaul.
Dhaul’s Global Energy Private Limited (GEPL) was contracted to sell electricity that it had bought from Nirani Sugars Ltd to electricity supply companies in Telangana. However, GEPL did not pay the sale amount from Telangana companies to Nirani Sugars Ltd.
In 2018, a Mudhol court closed the case after police filed a report saying that they have no evidence of cheating.
Nirani filed a fresh case, this time naming Harry Dhaul, his wife and seven others in the case. The Mudhol court issued new orders for the case’s investigation.
The 10 accused have filed for a reprieve in Karnataka High Court.
