Rain-flood damage: Rs 750 crore loss DK; basic facilities, 914 houses damaged

Mangaluru: In the backdrop of the torrential rains resulting natural disasters that occurred at several locations in Dakshina Kannada district, basic facilities worth Rs 750 crore have been damaged, while 914 houses and 1,229.66 hectares of crop has been lost. Action is being taken by the government to carry out relief work with haste and the officials in the district too must indulge in carrying out relief work quickly, said minister Kota Sinivas Poojary, speaking after conducting inspection on the damage caused by natural disaster at the meeting conducted at DC office on Thursday.

The DC gave information regarding the damage incurred in DK district. Altogether 944 houses have been damaged in the district. As relief measures, action has been taken to provide a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to fully damaged houses, Rs 1 lakh for partially damaged houses and Rs 25,000 for minor repair works. During the period of the construction of the house, the victim family will have to stay in a rented house and hence, a monthly assistance of Rs 5,000 will be provided to the families for the period. The district administration will construct shed worth Rs 50,000 for the families in difficulty. As immediate relief measure, Rs 1.91 crore has been distributed at the rate of Rs 10,000 per family, informed the DC.

1,415 km of road has been damaged incurring a loss of Rs 672.87 crore. 424 government offices have been damaged, 357.6 hectare of paddy, 754.92 hectares of areca nut, 55.70 hectares of coconut have been damaged while 12 heads of cattle and 2 lives have been lost. The families of the deceased have been given a compensation of Rs 5 lakh. 80 vented dams of minor irrigation department have been damaged incurring a loss of Rs 83 crore, informed officials.

105 families relocated

16 houses in Ganeshnagar in Mithabagilu and 17 houses in Makki in Belthnagady taluk are in danger. 45 houses are facing danger due to sea erosion at Ullal. 27 people have been temporarily relocated from Mandara village as a result of the garbage landslide that occurred at Pacchanady dumping yard. Inevitably, 105 families need to be relocated permanently. Land needs to be identified for the families of Mandara in Pacchanady. A special package from the government is required for constructing houses for them.

255 schools damaged: Reports asked

DDPI Shivaramayya has informed that 255 schools in DK district have been damaged due to the torrential rains. The minister directed the DDPI to immediately get reports regarding the structural stability of the schools and take necessary actions.

Damage to be estimated based on trees

For areca nut and coconut crop damage, Rs 18,000 will be provided as compensation per hectare. This will be of no use for the farmers. When the government acquires land, it pay Rs 3,000 as compensation for a single areca nut tree which is 15 years old. In the same way, coconut tress too have a maximum compensation, appealed MLA Rajesh Naik. In response to this, the minister directed the DC to carry out the survey in the same model and then submit the report.
