Suspend police officer: SDPI

Bajpe: A protest was staged by the members of the Mulki-Moodbidri unit of the SDPI in front of the Bajpe Police station on Thursday, October 25th demanding action against the Bajpe Police Inspector for allegedly committing atrocities on a woman in connection with an old case against her husband.

The woman has been identified as Salika (40), a resident of Ganjimutt near Kaikamba is presently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Mangaluru.

SDPI state secretary Ashraf Mazhar said that the assault on a woman by a police officer was a black spot on the police department, and demanded immediate suspension of the accused. If in case the officer was not suspended, the party will intensify its protest, he added.

Condemning the incident, SDPI DK district president Athavulla Jokatte demanded an effective investigation and suspension of the police officer. He also demanded that the police department should bear the treatment costs and initiate action against the officer within 48 hours. He warned that if the demands were not yet, the protestors would then picket the police commissioner’ office.

The state general secretary of the Women of India Movement, Ayesha Bajpe said that it was horrifying to see the police assault a woman.

According to the woman

According to Salika who is receiving treatment at a hospital, the police had come to her house in search of her husband on October 23, who is absconding since a year, pertaining to a case. However, when the police could not get a definite answer from her, they abused and assaulted her, alleges Salika. She further alleges that she was taken to the police station and then assaulted. Ashe also alleged that the police officer threatened that she would also be put behind bar along with her husband.

Case registered

A case against the accused police officer has been registered at Bajpe police. Police commissioner T R Suresh said he had received representation from the protestors, and that DCP (crime and traffic) Uma Prashant will inquire into the incident.
