Thursday Monsoon rain leaves behind trail of destruction in DK and Udupi

Mangaluru / Udupi: The incessant rainfall on Thursday left behind a trail of destruction in the coastal twin districts. Normal life went for a toss with flash floods and strong winds damaging private and public property.

In Mangaluru city artificial flooding was seen in the low-lying areas including, Kottara Chowki, Padil, Kottara, Kulur, Kannur, Kudroli, Alake, Kadri Kambala, Pacchanady, Malemar, and KS Rao road. Flooding at Kottara Chowki and Padil, affected the vehicular movement on the national highways.

Water entered several industries in the Bykampady Industrial Area, the second-largest industrial area in the state. The heavy equipment and vehicles were submerged underwater, and industries reported a loss of crores of rupees. Water ingress into the Gurudev Plastics factory, on Adka Auditorium road, damaged equipment and property worth Rs 1.5 Crore. Other industries said they were assessing the damage caused by the flooding.

As many as 77 houses were partially damaged and 11 houses completely destroyed in Dakshina Kannada alone due to heavy rain. Electricity distribution company MESCOM reported that 38 poles and 3 transformers have been damaged.

Puttur and Belthangady Taluks also received copious rainfall and reported destruction in its wake.

Udupi also received heavy showers on Thursday, which waterlogged the low-lying areas, triggering fears of floods in Kapu, Padubidri, Shirva, and Katapady. Kundapur and Byndoor also witnessed heavy downpours.

The teams from the NDRF and SDRF have been put on alert in the twin districts. Helplines have also been set up.

Red alert from July 4 to July 7

Monsoon rains are expected to continue from July 1 to July 4 and a “Yellow” alert has been sounded. IMD has predicted the rainfall to pick up the pace from July 4 to July 7 triggering a “Red alert” in the twin districts.

The District Deputy Commissioner has suggested that every Taluk Units/Taluk Disaster Management Committee should be pre-prepared for any eventuality.
