Udupi: Udupi DC Priyanka Mary Francis and Dakshina Kannada (DK) DC Sasikanth Senthil took up a spot inspection of the land identified for the construction of port at Hejamady. Rs 138.60 has been released by the centre for the project.
DC Priyanka Mary Francis spoke with media after inspecting the site and holding discussions with fishermen leaders and officials of the Fisheries Department and said that the work on breakwater would be taken up first and directed the revenue inspector to identify the land for the purpose.
DC Sasikanth Senthil said that fishermen from Dakshina Kannada had raised objection to the construction of breakwater at Hejamady, as it would result in coastal erosion at Sasihithlu.
The experts should chalk out a solution taking into consideration the coastal erosion while constructing the breakwater project, added the DC.
“We have been fighting for the construction of port at Hejamady for the past 50 years,” said Vijaya S Bangera, General Secretary of Mulki Purse Seine and Trawl Boat Fishermen Association.
The construction of Hejamady port is expected to reduce the pressure on ports at Malpe and Mangaluru.
