Udupi: Two students, who were returning to their residence, were reportedly abducted, assaulted, and robbed by a gang at late night on Tuesday, August 30. Police said that four persons were arrested for the crime.

The accused — identified as Zakriya, Razeem, Khalid, and Rehman — have been arrested by the Udupi City police.

Police said, the victims  — Braitil Biju and Mohammed Sinan– are students at a nursing school at Manipal and were on their way to their residence in Manipal on foot after their catering shift got over at a private hotel situated near Karavali Bypass. They flagged down a car that was moving towards Manipal near Kalsanka asking for a drop.

The occupants of the car (registration number KA-01-MA-5287) offered them a ride. But Biju and Sinan refused the offer after noticing a foul smell emanating from the car. After this, the students were allegedly abducted by the four at knifepoint and were taken to a park in Doddanagudde. The kidnappers reportedly robbed the students of their cellphones and demanded Rs 2 lakhs for their release.

One of the victims managed to escape from the abductors and alerted the police. The gang took the other student to Kaup and Shirva all the while physically assaulting him.

Police got into action and arrested the accused from Shirva. A case has been registered at the Udupi City police station in this regard.
