Mangaluru: A team led by pediatric surgeon Dr Sadashiva Rao and Jayatirtha have been successful in performing vesicostomy surgery at KMC for the first time.
A four-year old was suffering from repeated urinary tract infection and on more inspection it was diagnosed that the child was suffering from Vesico-ureteric reflux (VUR). In this medical condition, and can cause stunted growth in the child, increase blood pressure and sometimes leads to kidney failure.
In this medical condition, normally the pipes from the kidney to the urinary bladder are rejoined. This surgery is done similar to the laparoscopic method by creating a small hole externally on the urinary bladder. Thus the surgery is done without making a big wound on the belly.
Normally, post surgery, the patient has to remain in the hospital for a period of a week. But, by using this method of creating a small hole, the patient is released within four days post the surgery. Paediatrician Dr Kamala P Bhat and Anesthesiologist Dr Neeta assisted in the surgery.
