Mangaluru: Speaking on the scarcity of water being faced by the district, “The uncertainty of rains has inevitably compelled the application of the water rationing system due to uncertainty of rains,” said district in-charge minister U T Khader addressing media here on Tuesday, April 30.
“Mangaluru City Corporation had decided to cut down water supply for two days from this week. The rationing system which was supposed to start from April 30 will be implemented from May 1. In order to avoid severe water crisis in future, rationing system will have to begin,” he informed.
Advising Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyasa Kamath to speak sensibly on water issues Mr Khader said, “Mangaluru South MLA had said not to play politics in water issues. But as a minister, I voluntarily called Mangaluru South and North MLAs and discussed about water problems in the city. Both these MLAs did not call me to discuss about water problems. But I took them into confidence.”
“MLA Kamath also questioned about not bringing Rs 115 crore for the increase of water level at Thumbay vented dam from 6 meters to 7 meters. It was during Siddaramaiah’s tenure, the new vented dam was constructed with 6-meter water level. To increase the water level to 7 meters, measures have to be taken to give compensation for those who lose land. But from last one year no discussion was done about it. During Yeddyurappa’s tenure only the project of new Thumbay dam was sanctioned, But fund was sanctioned during Congress’ tenure. Being in responsible position, MLA Kamath should speak sensibly on water issues,” advised Khader.
“We should stop doing politics in water issues. Let us pray for the arrival of rains. There was also an instance of rain arriving after June 15. So we should take all the measures to prevent water crisis in coming days,” he added.
