Mangaluru: The 2nd Additional District and Sessions Court on Friday sentenced a 44-year-old man to seven years rigorous imprisonment in connection with the 2014 rape case of a minor.

According to the police charge sheet, the 14-year-old victim was residing in a rented house with her mother. The convicted Hameed, a resident of Katipalla was related to the victim and would often visit their house. For nearly six months he continued to sexually exploit the girl by promising to marry her. However, when she conceived, Hameed gave her some pills that led to the termination of her pregnancy. Then he kidnapped her and kept her at a relative’s house in Kasaragod. Following a complaint in February 2014, the Suratkal police arrested Hameed and later filed a charge sheet.

Upholding the arguments put forth by the Special Public Prosecutor Venkatramana Swamy, the Second Additional District and Sessions Court, Judge Pallavi B R sentenced Hameed to seven years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹20,000 for offences under Sections 376 (rape) and 313 (causing miscarriage without women’s consent) of the IPC and under Section 4 of POCSO Act, 2012. Out of the penalty amount of Rs 20,000, the judge directed payment of ₹15,000 as compensation to the girl.

The judge also ruled that the victim was eligible to get a compensation from the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) under the Karnataka Victim Compensation Scheme.
