Madikeri: A person who had become homeless after losing his land and house to the torrential rains of August last year has committed suicide at Jodupala village here. The deceased is identified as N B Charan (38) and he took the extreme step by consuming poison.
The family members of the deceased allege that Charan committed suicide due to the delay by the government in providing rehabilitation in good time.
Charan had taken ill after consuming poison on Jan 10 and hence was admitted at Madikeri district hospital. He was brought to Mangaluru hospital for further treatment on Jan 11th. However, Charan failed to respond to the given treatment and succumbed to the poisoning on Jan 12th. The case came light after some delay. Madikeri rural police have registered a case in this connection.
It has come to knowledge that Charan had 5 acres of land at 2nd Monnangeri village which was mostly lost to incessant rains and landslide. He also lost his house to floods at Jodupala. Due to this Charan had become homeless and was bogged by the worries of how to repay the Rs 3 lakh bank loan he had taken for the development of the farm. Besides he was also finding it very difficult to come up with Rs 3,000 to look after the medical expenses of his mother Srilatha who is a heart patient.
Brother was feeling sad that the government had not yet provided a house. The loss of house and farm led him to depression through the thought on how he would pay back the loan. He used to share this issue with us and feel sad. Now he has committed suicide, says Yatish N B, younger brother of the deceased.
