A 50-year-old man from Bengaluru lost over Rs 5 lakh to a fraudster who allegedly befriended him on Whatsapp.
The complainant claimed that the Whatsapp user had been texting him ‘good morning’ messages for the past two years. On October 8, the user shared her location while texting the man.
According to a TOI report, when the man arrived at the hotel near Veeranapalya to meet the user, he found three people waiting for him inside the room. The trio claimed to be cops and accused him of being a drug peddler. They also snatched his credit card, wallet and forced him to unlock his phone, and left after locking him up in the room.
The man managed to escape from the hotel. However, upon reaching home, he found that the fraudsters had in different transactions transferred over Rs 5.9 lakh from his account.
The investigating police have arrested one of the fraudsters while the other two are absconding.
