Karkala: An accused in a murder case was acquitted by a local court.
Judge Dinesh Hegde of the 2nd Additional District and Sessions Court has acquitted Harish Shervegar (28), who was accused of killing Anand Shevegar (63) in 2021 at Ajekar in Karkala taluk. The court held that the prosecution failed to prove the charges against the accused.
It may be recalled that the dead body of Anand Shervegar was found in the verandah of the house where he lived alone in May 2021. The death was suspected to be murder and a case was registered at Ajekar Police Station.
At the time, Anand Shervegar had sold his four-acre land and was living alone in a room about 100m from his ancestral home, separate from his wife and children.
Police suspected that Harish, a relative of Anand, who visited him daily at his residence could be the culprit. Police chargesheet claimed that Harish had a fight with Anand under the influence of alcohol on the fateful night, leading to his death.
The trial court dismissed the accusations on the basis of lack of evidence and acquitted the accused. Advocate Mukta Nithyananda Shenoy argued for the defense.
