Udupi: A granite ‘Lajje Gauri’ idol, supposedly from the sixth century, was discovered at Barkur village, Udupi district. The idol is fixed onto the side of a road in the village.

Dr Shivakant Bajpai from the Archaeological Survey of India, Bengaluru Circle had first seen it in a post on social media. He is presently on a tour of coastal Karnataka.

Barkur was a historical town which also served as the capital of the Alupa dynasty.

Lajje Gauri symbolises fertility and is usually depicted in a birthing position.
