Elderly thief nabbed: Rs 3.50 lakh gold ornaments, two wheeler seized

Surathkal: An elderly thief who was living a life of luxury which he seems to have earned by committing theft at various location in Dakshina Kannada district has been arrested by Surathkal police. Around 121 grams of gold ornaments worth Rs 3,50,000 and 2 two wheelers have also been seized by the police.

The arrested accused is identified as Aboobakkar alias Abdul Khader alias Barpe Aboobakkar (64) from Chikmagalur. An associate of his is on the run.

Incident details

Last month, Ramesh Poojary, a resident of NMPT colony located at Madhya in Surathkal had lodged a police complaint in which he stated that 208 grams of gold ornaments and Rs 25,000 had been stolen from his house.

During investigation, the act of the robbery was found on the CCTV footage, thanks to the CCTV camera which had been earlier installed by Mr Poojary.

In the footage, early in the morning around 3 am, Aboobakkar and his associate gain access to the house by opening the front door using the house keys itself. They had procured the key which was within the house by making use of a pole and a hook. After committing the robbery, they tries to destroy the evidence by cleaning the floor as well as the door. But police got the evidence in the cupboard. Ased on the face found on the CCTV footage, the police nabbed Aboobakkar.

The accused had a clothes store in Chikmagalur and used to run the store in the morning and reserved the night times for thieving. He used to roam around on his two wheeler and commit robbery. He had come from Chikmagalur to Madhya on his two wheeler to commit the robbery. He has accepted of committing robbery at Moodbidri, Bajpe, Venoor, Mulki police station limits. The police suspect that the accused must have committed robberies in Kerala as well.
