Fishermen protest begins from Malpe port – Hundreds take part

Malpe: The fishermen protest regarding the issue of missing boat and seven fishermen, began at Malpe port and was joined in by fishermen from three coastal districts on Sunday Jan 6th. The protest was flagged off by G Shanker.
Fishermen from Mangaluru, Udupi, Bhatkal and Karwar are also expected to take part. The fishermen’s rally will pass through Ambalpady national highway and are likely to block the highway.
The aim of the protest is to put pressure on state and central governments to trace the missing fishermen and is conducted by the fishermen associations here.
The protest has attracted support from the surrounding people including Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje, auto-rickshaw, taxi and tempo owners and shop owners.
The incident
The deep sea trawler identified as ‘Suvarna Tribhuja’ left port for deep sea fishing along with a crew of seven identified as the boat owner Chandrashekhar from Badanidiyoor and fishermen Damodara, also from Badanidiyoor, Lakshman, Sathish, Harish, Ramesh, and Jogaiah from Kumta and Ravi from Honnavar on December 13.
