Karkala: Amid a general shortage of mango growers in the coastal districts, most of the supply is being sourced from other states and districts. However, this season has brought encouraging news for mango lovers, as regions like Karkala and Hebri have reported a good mango yield.
Despite facing challenges such as erratic weather and pest issues, a few farmers in these areas, with the support of horticulture department officials and agricultural experts, have managed to cultivate mangoes successfully. Mango traders noted that although there’s been a good harvest in some locations, market prices haven’t skyrocketed this time.
Mango Orchard in Karkala
The horticulture department maintains a mango orchard near Ramasamudra in Karkala, which has over 120 mango trees. Some of the older trees have been replaced with new saplings in recent years. This season, the orchard recorded a harvest of around three tonnes of mangoes. According to officials, most of these mangoes will be available for sale at the upcoming Mango Fair in Doddanagudde, Udupi, scheduled from May 14 to 18.
Two-Acre Mango Cultivation in Hebri
In Hebri, farmer Annayya Shetty has cultivated various mango varieties including Malabar and Totapuri across two acres of land. He has harvested mangoes filling 48 crates, which have been supplied to wholesale traders.
Mangoes from the Hebri region include varieties such as Mundappa, Benetta, Apus, and Wild Mango. From the Ramasamudra horticulture region, varieties like Apus, Benetta, Banganapalli, Totapuri, Mithayigiri, and Mallika Surnalli will be supplied to traders for the upcoming mango fair.
A Satisfying Yield
“With two acres under cultivation, we’ve had a good yield this year. Initially, there was a shortage of local mangoes in the market, but it’s heartening to see that mangoes grown by local farmers are now reaching consumers,” said Annayya Shetty, a mango grower from Hebri.
