Mangaluru: Youth IPS official B M Laxmi Prasad took over charge as the new Superintendent of Police of Dakshina Kannada district on Tuesday.

The former SP Dr B R Ravikante Gowda has been promoted and is now appointed as the IGP of the fire service in Bengaluru. Mr Laxmi Prasad was serving as the SP of the Internal Security division (Centre for Counter Terrorism – CCT) in Bengaluru.

People friendly police

After receiving his charge as the new SP of DK district, Mr Laxmi Prasad spoke with the media and said, “My main aim is to make the police department even more people friendly. Even now, the people have slight suspicion or fear regarding the police and police station. An environment needs to be created where people can visit the police station without any fear. I am thinking of taking effective action in this regard. It is the police department’s responsibility to maintain law and order. I’ll definitely not give opportunity for illegal activities. The people of the district are intelligent and know about the law. If the law is followed, then there is no scope for any malice,” he said.

“It is also a challenge to work in the district which is witnessing fast development. My father, was earlier working at the KIOCL. Up till my SSLC, I studied in Kudremukh. My grandfather is from Karkala. While I was giving my service as the SP of the state’s anti naxal force (ANF), I have gone around DK and Udupi districts and learnt about the district. A know a little of Tulu language also,” said the new SP.

Beat system to be further strengthened

Beat system has been carried on since the beginning in the police system. In DK district, the former SP Dr B R Ravikante Gowda had made it more effective. I too will take action to further strengthen it and for this, the people’s support is important,” said Mr Prasad.

Illegal sand mining to be controlled

Responding to a question from the reporters regarding illegal sand mining in DK district, the SP said that he will gather information in connection to sand mining in the district and then take proper action.
