Subrahmanya: Five domesticated elephants from Nagarhole and Dubare Elephant camps arrived at Renjiladi in Kadaba taluk for controlling the wild tusker menace in the region.

After an uproar over the death of 2 persons in a tusker attack on Monday, the forest department has launched an operation to rescue and relocate the pachyderms.

The elephants – Abhimanyu, Prashant, Harsha, Kanjan, and Mahendra – have been brought to aid the officials in the combing operations. Lorries carrying the trained elephants arrived on Monday night.

A team of officials is also engaged in tracking the wild herd using drones. A team of specialist veterinarians from Nagarhole and Mangaluru has also been called in.

The combing operations have begun on Tuesday under the leadership of Deputy Forest Conservator Dr. Dinesh Kumar, ACF Praveen Kumar, Zonal Forest Officers N. Manjunath, R. Girish, and Raghavendra.

Two locals had been trampled to death by a wild elephant on Monday, after which locals held a flash protest demanding the capture of the elephants responsible. Later in the day, Minister S. Angara, District Deputy Commissioner Ravikumar M. R., and DFO Dinesh Kumar visited the spot of the attack and promised to capture and relocate the wild animals.
