Kandlur police station: Miscreants throw stones; four arrested

Under the excuse of causing hindrance to illegal sand extraction

Kundapur/Basrur: Some miscreants threw stones at Kandlur police station in Kundapur on Thursday night at around 10:30pm for preventing them from indulging in illegal sand extraction.

On Thursday night, the rural police station personnel conducted a raid on an illegal sand extraction site and seized vehicles. A few insisted that the arrested be released, but since the police didn’t heed to their demand, a group attacked the police station. Of the attackers, four were arrested. Bette Shaid (32), Tabrez (26), Zakir Husain (32) and Kaaran Shakir (24) have been produced in the Court.

The District Superintendent of Police Nisha James visited Kandlur police station in the morning. Additional police force has been deployed. Additonal SP Kumarachandra, DySP B P Dinesh Kumar and other higher officials were present.

Case registered

On Thursday night, SI Shridhar Naik had seized vehicle used for illegal sand extraction. Even as the staff were parking the vehicles at the station premises Shaid, Zakir, Shakir,Tabrez, Nushad, Ali Kote, Karani Musin, Shaid, Karani Nadim, Karani Shahid, Rayan, Karani Bilal, Karani Mansoor, Mohammed, Sadakat, Jimmy Jeffry, Abdulla, Fahad, Nahim, Hamid came in two wheelers and surrounded the personnel. They questioned the staff on why they arrested their men for transporting sand and demanded that they be left and no case be booked on the seized vehicles. They also manhandled the staff. They then threw stones at the police station and bolted off. However, in the melee of starting their bikes, the police successfully nabbed four of the accused.

The police station has registered case for damaging the police station by throwing stones and for preventing a public servant from discharging his duties. The police have also seized 5 bikes.

DC, AC were also attacked

Two years ago, illegal sand etractors had attacked the then DC and AC in Kandlur. On April 2 2017, the then DC Priyanka Mary Francis, Kundapur sub divisional officer Shilpa Nag, Village Accountant of Amparu village  and other officials were attacked and stones were pelted.

3 teams for investigation

“This case has been considered seriously. The police department will actively take legal action against those trying to take law into their own hands. Already 4 accused have been arrested and 3 police teams will be created for catching the remaining accused. Additional police force has been deployed. Presently the situation is peaceful. Checkposts have been erected at 4 strategic locations. Special patrolling has been initiated as a precautionary measure. Night rounds too have been started from Friday night itself,” informed Nisha James, Udupi District Superintendent of Police
