A case of fraud has come to light at the Karkala City Police Station, involving the duping of an Anganwadi worker who was promised a promotion to the position of Anganwadi supervisor.
The victim, Sasikala, a resident of Sachhari Pete in Mundkur village, was lured into the scam by an individual named Venugopal from Bangalore, who claimed to have the authority to secure the coveted position for her.
Unfortunately, after extracting a total sum of Rs 5 lakhs, Venugopal disappeared without fulfilling his promise.
As per the complainant, Venugopal approached Sasikala and assured her of the Anganwadi supervisor role. Initially, he requested Rs 2 lakhs as a bribe for the post. Trusting his words, Sasikala transferred Rs 80,000 to the bank account of Venugopal’s brother, Vishwanath. Over time, she continued to send additional amounts, totaling Rs 2.80 lakhs.
On March 23, 2021, Venugopal visited Sasikala’s residence and approached her for financial assistance, claiming it was urgently needed for his daughter’s medical treatment following a road accident. Sasikala handed over additional Rs 2.20 lakhs to Venugopal, bringing the total amount to approximately Rs 5 lakhs.
However, after Sasikala realised that she had been swindled, she filed a complaint at the Karkala Rural Police Station, accusing Venugopal of blocking all communication after receiving the money.
