Gadag: In a significant milestone for Karnataka’s cultural heritage, the medieval temples of Belur, Halebeedu in Hassan, and Somanathapura in Mysuru have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Dating back to the 12th and 15th centuries, these temples are emblematic of the state’s rich historical and artistic legacy.
Tourism Minister Dr. H K Patil announced the global recognition at a press conference in Gadag city’s district administration building. He said that this accolade is the result of sustained efforts by the state government to showcase Karnataka’s cultural heritage to the world.
UNESCO’s recognition is expected to boost tourism in the region, leading to an influx of visitors. This surge in tourism is anticipated to create opportunities for the local handicraft and cottage industries, as well as generate employment in the area. Karnataka government headed by CM Siddaramaiah has pledged to enhance infrastructure to cater to the growing number of tourists, he said.
The minister said the decision to confer World Heritage status on these temples was made during the 45th all-member meeting of UNESCO in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The temples had been under consideration since 2014, and in 2018, the Karnataka government provided detailed information about them to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
Following a visit by the International Committee on Ancient Monuments and Sites in 2022, UNESCO was apprised of the temples’ architectural grandeur, he added.
These three temples now join Karnataka’s Western Ghat region, Hampi, and Pattadakallu on the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage list.
