Ullal: On the night of Monday, November 23, beaches along the coast of Karnataka from Malpe to Karwar experienced huge crowds as the seawater turned blue due to unique bioluminescence phenomenon.
Someshwara beach here too saw a large number of people gathering to see the ‘blue waves.’ Most of them stayed till late in the night.
Photos of this natural wonder immediately went viral on social media.
This strange biological phenomenon has been taking place in the Arabian Sea for the past two, three days. The algae in the seawater are green throughout the day and turn blue in the night.
The sea had turned the same colour for a few days in the middle of September. Officials from the pollution control board had then taken samples from the sea to test for pollutants.
Experts now believe that algae concentration has returned to the sea which on reflecting the moonlight appear blue in colour.
