Kolar: Nearly 50 people fell sick after eating Prasada at a temple in Beeraganahalli in Srinivasapura Taluk here on Saturday, January 1.

The incident took place during the special prayers that were held at the Gagamma Temple in Beeragana for welcoming the new year. Popular dishes of Chitranna and Kesaribath were served to the devotees in the afternoon as Prasada.

The devotees who ate the Prasada in the evening, mostly women and children, fell ill with complaints of severe vomiting. Many were taken to the hospital for treatment.

As the news spread, people started panicking. Anxious devotees who had eaten the Prasada rushed to the government as well as private hospitals in the district.

However, as the symptoms were mild, patients were only given first aid and medicines and sent home. There were no reports of anyone dying in the incident.

Meanwhile, government health officials visited the village and made sure the situation was under control. The officials are also inspecting the samples of Prasada and the water bodies in the village to find the cause of the incident.

Shrinivasapura Police have registered a complaint about the incident. Sources said that two persons who had prepared the Prasada have been for further questioning.
