Kundapura: Officials stop child marriage at Trasi

Kundapura: Udupi district’s Women and Child Welfare Department officials on Thursday, December 31 stopped the marriage of a 17-year-old girl at Trasi’s Mahaganapathi Hall in the taluk here.

The 17-year-old girl was to be married to a 28-year-old boy and more than 200 people were in attendance at the wedding ceremony.

The District Women and Child Welfare Department officials, along with officials from other departments arrived at the hall and stopped the child marriage and informed families of both the bride and about the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006.

The officials also took a written assurance from the families, hall owners and priests to not go ahead with the marriage.
