Law review: A revenge legal drama let down by loose plot

Law is the first-ever Kannada film to get a digital release on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, July 17. This movie is produced by Puneeth Rajkumar’s PRK productions, written and directed by Raghu Samarth.

This movie revolves around Nandini (Ragini Prajwal), a law student who is a victim of gang rape by three men and wants to fight for her justice.

She receives a lot opposition from her father (Avinash) and her folks as they claim it is not advisable for a woman to speak openly about being a rape victim.

As the investigation for the crime goes on, she finds herself tangled in multiple problems present in the judiciary systems. One has to watch the movie to find out whether she gets justice.

The movie has a lot of court drama. Performances of Mukhyamantri Chandru and Rajesh Nataranga stands out in the film. Being a newcomer, Ragini’s performance as a young lawyer is sharp in the movie.

This movie has a good cast of supporting actors with the likes of Achyuth Kumar, Sudharani and Mandya Ramesh.

The writing and dialogues in Law is a huge set back for the movie. The film opens up by Nandini going to a police station to file a complaint where the police officers being foul-mouthed treat her as a joke. Even though the writer’s intention is to showcase it as how the people in India treat rape survivors, the casual writing involved with this subject leaves you confused.

Even though the movie revolves around Nandini, the development of the protagonist’s character or thought given to her role in the movie is missing. In every scene, the makers randomly move from one character to another to give a new twist in the next scene. However, it does not go well as each explanation given to those twists and narration is too far off from reality.

Law also has songs and dance numbers that are needed for a commercial movie but it does not go well with a movie that deals with such a serious issue. The court scenes are compelling. but the comedy punchlines and dialogues make you wonder whether this is a comedy film or a thriller.

Law tries to narrate a gripping tale but the twists and logic behind them could have been made with some research.

During this pandemic, Law has made a good move by releasing over OTT as there are high hopes that it will reach more audience than a theatrical release.

Watch this movie if you have 2 hours to kill during this lockdown.
