Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Corporation has prepared a Rs 1.09 crore tender for the construction of bus bays at the city’s major junctions.

An action plan was submitted to the State government for the construction of the bus bays at junctions including Bunts Hostel, Mallikatte, KPT, Maryhill and Kulasekhara under the Mahatma Gandhi Urban Development Scheme.

Already, bus lanes exist in various parts of the city, which are not adequately utilized.

City Bus Owners Association’s president Dilraj Alva said, “Bus lanes have already been constructed at some junctions for smooth traffic in the city. But these were built unscientifically. We have already brought this to the notice of the Police Commissioner. Buses line up in the bus lanes at certain junctions. A bus in the lane cannot leave until the bus ahead leaves first. Hence, the bus lane is not used much. The MCC is now considering the construction of bus bays. But there is not enough space for that in the city. Instead, more separate lanes for buses can be built.”

“Bus bays are needed to ease the city’s main roads which have high traffic. Hence, we have decided to construct bus bays and will call a tender for it soon. In some areas, there are bus lanes that need to be upgraded,” said Mayor Premanand Shetty.

Along with the construction of the bus bays, the MCC will also be developing major traffic circles and junctions in the city.
