Mangaluru: With an intent to handle the drug addiction of jail inmates, authorities at Mangaluru District Jail have decided to start a “Drugs De-Addiction Center” inside the prison.
The number of drug addicts among the under-trial prisoners is increasing day by day. Many of those arrested under the NDPS Act are addicted to drugs when they come to jail and their behavior is outrageous.
With the increase of drug addicts among the under-trial prisoners, instances of smuggling ganja inside the prison premises have come to the fore.
Prisoners addicted to drugs often try to get their relatives and well-wishers to supply them with drugs.
Several people have been held in their attempt to smuggle ganja and other prohibited drugs by concealing them in pickle boxes, slippers, and other parts of the body to give them to the jail inmates.
In general, checking the supply of drugs inside prisons has also become another big challenge. To tackle this soon a ‘Drugs De-Addiction Center’ will come up within the prison.
In this, there will be medical officers of the district hospital, consultants, and experts from Roshini Nilaya. Officials said that they will constantly educate about the dangers of drugs and provide appropriate treatment if needed.
More than 100 drug addicts
There are currently 371 under-trial prisoners in the Mangaluru District Jail, of which 65 are under the NDPS (Sale/Consumption/Trafficking of Drugs) Act. About 35 of those arrested in other acts are drug addicts. A total of around 100 inmates are said to be drug addicts.
