Mangaluru: Governor of Karnataka, Thawar Chand Gehlot, virtually inaugurated the project of “Up-gradation of
existing weigh-bridges to automated, unmanned weighbridges” in the New Mangalore Port on February 2.

The Karnataka Governor, who arrived in Mangaluru on February 1, visited the NMPA administrative office on Thursday after participating in the 47th Indian Coast Guard Raising Day.

The Port, under its initiative of Ease of Doing Business, is converting all its weighbridges to unmanned automated weighbridges for faster clearance and transparency in the process. All trucks entering the port are RFID enabled. The whole process will be completed within 25 seconds, whereas the conventional weighment process will take up to 6 minutes, a press release said.

The advantages of the automation of weighbridge include: Fast turn-around time for trucks, Transparency in the process with no human intervention, drivers don’t have to alight form the truck/trailer cabin during weighment process, cashless process, as weighment report can be generated agency wise for billing purpose at the end of the day, fuel saving for the truck/trailer as the process is faster and so on, the press release added.
