Mangaluru: The unit producing BS-VI fuel at Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) has become operational.
It is the first such unit in the State.
The Rs 1,810 crore unit was set up after instructions from the Central government to phase out BS-IV fuel.
MRPL had stopped production of BS-IV fuel in January last year and was producing BS-VI fuel since then in the same unit.
BS-VI fuel contains only 10 ppm sulfur whereas BS-IV has 50 ppm.
Sulfur emission from vehicles is the major criterion of increasing pollution levels.
